To whom it may concern,Jonathan CAPTANIS has been a student of Sylvania High School for the past two and a half years. I was his science teacher when he was in Year 7 when I first recognised the extraordinary computing skills Jonathan has. I brought the class to one of the computer rooms to do work on the computers and I was very impressed with his ability to use the software and the hardware.

As Jonathan worked through his computing assignment, he started asking questions about the school network and why some of the computers were down or not operating efficiently. I told him that it was an on going problem and technicians have been in and out of the school, at considerable expense, without fixing the problems successfully. Jonathan seemed to be able to recognise what the problems were and asked if he could fix them. As the trained technicians had limited success, I agreed. In less than a week all computer were working, the network problems resolved and an improved security system was put into place.

Jonathan's ability to administer the network has meant that the school has not had to have a call out the computer technicians since. Jonathan has now full supervisor access to the 3 students computing laboratories (Win95, Win3.1 and Macintosh) and as a result, all three are working very effectively. His skills are widely recognised around the school and as such he has trained a small group of students to help administer the networks.

His knowledge has been invaluable this year with the established of our third computer room, a laboratory of 18, Win95 networked in star topology using ethernet protocol. This room is in the process of establishing Internet connections across the network as well as our own internal Intranet. Jonathan's knowledge of Win95 networking with TCP/IP and IPX/SPX protocols was invaluable and has enabled us to share Internet, files and printers across the whole network.

Jonathan was the prime mover in the design, authoring, uploading and maintaining of the school's home page. The authoring of the page was done without any off the shelf programs, but just with HTML programming. The design of the Web-Site has attracted many positive comments and I believe has resulted in increased exposure of the school to the wider public. The page has many advanced Web design features, designed by Jonathon including; HTML 3.2, JavaScript, Java (advanced), Chat'o'Matic Java Applet, and many other applets & applications.

Jonathan has also demonstrated advance skills in programming. He has a thorough understanding of Visual Basic and has designed a "chat program" that can be used across the network within the Novell 3.1 network system. A program that the District Computer Technology Advisor commented on that was equal to any programming project had had seen, including Year 12 students doing 3 Unit Computing (the highest level computing course available in High schools). He has also demonstrated advanced knowledge in; DOS and JAVA. He also developed a "Network Monitor(c) Program" in JAVA for networks. It logs user problems and uses a server to view workstation status (including current user information) and to receive any new problems.

Jonathan's skills in computing extend to all aspects of computing, as was recognised in his acceleration from the Year 9-10 Computing Studies course to Year 11. He has demonstrated outstanding ability across all operating system as well as knowledge and understanding of software applications, including Adobe PhotoShop, Paint Shop Pro, WinWord and ClarisWorks.

Jonathan would be perfectly suited for any position in the computing industry. He is a young man who is always looking for new challenges in computing and has a depth of knowledge, which I have not seen in any student previously. He has good inter-personal skills, presents well and can communicate effectively to people of varying ages and computing expertise on all aspects of computing.

It is without any hesitation that I would recommend Jonathan's services to any prospective employer. Jonathan's skills and expertise would be a benefit to any business, retail or commercial involved in computing. He is a young man with a very bright future in computing and would be an asset to any employer.

    Yours faithfully

    Greg Rennie

    (Computer Co-ordinator, Sylvania High School.
